Crash by Gamma-Ray turns a failed paper plane into a very realistic plane crash, complete with smoke, fire, and a busted nose. I think part of why it works is that folding a paper airplane is such a universal experience, and there are a lot more failures than successes! Part of the enjoyment of the activity is learning from each crash and modifying your design to go a little further each time. So looking at this piece, full of the knowledge that you’ve caused dozens of the same disasters, just makes it even funnier. I love the artist’s choice to use the smaller flames of something mechanical on fire rather than the big flame you’d expect from paper on fire. Along with the flaming runway tracks behind the plane and the chaotic wisps of smoke, it’s an element of realism that helps the joke to land. And my favorite moment might be the smallest detail- a cattle skull tucked away in the subtle texture of the land. It’s a silly moment, and a great way to reinforce scale.
