Pampling’s Evil Queen

Evil Queen by JayHai uses a famous image of Queen’s Freddie Mercury and recreates the pose with Disney’s Famous Evil Queen. It’s a surprisingly effective mix, with the gold color of Freddie’s yellow coat suddenly feeling quite regal when it matches the queen’s crown. Another brilliant moment is the way the upraised hand has been altered, with Freddie’s fist turned into the queen’s hand grasping her iconic apple. While Freddie’s gesture feels powerful and triumphant, the queen’s face reads more darkly determined, suiting her evil sensibilities. My only quibble with the piece is the inclusion of the word “Evil” above the “Queen” text. While small, the less sophisticated font choice brings down the level of the art. It’s also unnecessary, as the mashup is clear without the text.
