Pampling’s Kanagawa Cat Wave

Kanagawa Cat Wave by Tobiasfonseca combines one of the most popular artworks of all time, The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, with one of the most popular animals of all time, the cat. While it’s a concept that has been mined similarly before (for instance the bunny version Uprising, which I think was the first in this vein), this piece does it well and charmingly. Despite some (very understandable) repetition of cats, there’s enough variety in poses to make the cats feel unique, and genuinely tumbling with the motion of the waves. The whole illustration is very effective, but my favorite moment is the subtle way that even Mount Fuji has gotten a bit of a feline makeover. So cute!
