Painting Day by Robert Ritcher uses the mechanic of painting to turn night into day, and in an extremely charming choice, uses an astronaut as the painter. It’s a quirky choice, and one that helps make the surreal scene tell a story. It’s sweet to think of a space explorer, bored with the cold emptiness of space, taking it into his own hands to brighten up the place. Whether you read the design as an astronaut changing his own night to day or as him changing the night to day for the world, it’s a slick concept. The power of the transition is enhanced by the way the sun/moon is split so starkly and by the detail of each body (craters and sunspots). To keep the space side of things from paling in comparison to the brighter day elements, a bright white ladder and pair of shooting stars create interest. Good stuff!
