Pampling’s The Great Wave of Skull

The Great Wave of Skull by Quilimo expertly takes two images we’re all familiar with, The Great Wave and a skull, and combines them into something fresh and new. I love the way the classic wave print hugs the curve of the cranium, leaving the rest of the skull’s dome as empty space and a text block. It’s a choice that pulls you in like a fast current, so you’re exploring each crashing wave and swirl of sea mist. Skull elements like teeth and holes are sometimes mirrored by the motions of the water, and sometimes overlapped to create contrast (the way the boat dips over one eye socket is especially neat). The end result feels like something a sophisticated pirate would bear on his flag, beautiful but also a bit frightening, and a reminder that even a gorgeous seascape holds deadly danger.
