Pampling’s Trainer Vitruviano

Trainer Vitruviano by Redbug translates Pokemon into the style of Da Vinci, with excellent results. I’ve seen this style done previously with Pikachu as the central character, but I think the choice to center the player character is the stronger one. It allows the exterior doodles to encompass a lot more about the game, featuring many more monsters, which extends the appeal of the concept. While the text is too small to read in this medium, it gives the appearance of a wealth of thought and information that feels appropriate to the amount of time and strategy fans pour into these games. The variation of the smaller drawings is another strength, investigating the animal’s most iconic elements in different ways, like highlighting the tail of Charmander while Squirtle’s shell is explored. It does a good job of capturing the most recognizable elements of the series.
