Rainbows & Fluff by Keli Colombini is my favorite Threadless print this week. Sometimes the most simple concepts turn out to be the best ones, and this is one of those cases. There’s something very childlike and friendly about the idea of taking the always cheerful rainbow and making it even more tactile, something you don’t want to just look at but instead want to touch and hug. It’s just familiar enough to feel nostalgic, but out of the norm enough to be iconic in its own right.
Occult Cat by Deniart definitely channels a lot of spooky atmosphere. Hairless cats are often a bit unsettling, and its only enhanced here by giving the creature three empty eyes. His pose raises one paw, as though he’s put out the candle himself, and he gazes back over his shoulder in a very human way, like something has happened just out of frame. Even the frame has been altered for maximum effect, letting the dark smoke of the candle break through its walls and seem to color the shirt itself. It’s slick work, especially for how the crescent mood sets the horror-tinged scene.
Wake Up Your Mind! by badbasilisk interfaces with the calming properties of tea in a different way by turning a teacup into a floating meditator. It achieves some really nice visual trickery by having the cup’s handle seem similar to the way the legs are drawn in their crosslegged pose (same thickness, both having a foot at the end) and by turning the mouth of the cup into a speech bubble through the addition of a curved hook. I like the way the plate grounds the piece and gives context to the cup’s floating height. Even the tea’s steam lines seem to do double duty, also giving the illusion of psychic or aura lines. Very neat!
