The origins of Black History Month are forever linked to historian and University of Chicago alumnus Carter G. Woodson, one of the first scholars to study the history of the African diaspora. He founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) in 1915, and pioneered the celebration of “Negro History Week” in 1926—a precursor to Black History Month. He made it his life mission to preserve the history of African-Americans in a world in which their contributions are routinely overlooked by the writers of textbooks and society at large.
In recognition of Black History Month, we challenge you to create a new design in the spirit of preserving and celebrating Black history and culture. Make something the Threadless community can showcase year-round as a reminder that Black history is inseparable from American history. There are so many routes you can take! Find inspiration from historical figures such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., or tap into current events and deliver a strong message like “Black Lives Matter.” You can also choose to focus on the arts—music, dance, and film are all great sources of inspiration as you illustrate a vibrant and active scene that will grab attention.
After submitting your design and adding it to your Artist Shop, there’s an extra step you can take if you want to make an impact with your art. From your Artist Dashboard, you can choose to donate a portion of your earnings from your new design to a specific Cause, particularly Racial Injustice. There are several organizations you can support today that are actively fighting racial inequality and discrimination, including Black Visions Collective, The Bail Project, and Chicago Freedom School.
