Threadless’s Cheugy design contest

Being trendy is overrated in Threadless‘s new Cheugy t-shirt design competition. Here’s what they’re looking for…

If you’ve never heard the word “cheugy” (pronounced chew-gee) until now, there’s a good chance you have a few cheugy things in your closet. You might even be wearing something cheugy right now—GASP.

For those who don’t spend much time on TikTok, Gen-Z commonly uses this term to describe folks, usually Millennials, who follow out-of-date fashion and lifestyle trends. Examples of cheugy: side hair parts, skinny jeans, the cry laughing emoji, Instagram captions like “I did a thing” after a haircut. Pretty much anything that was popular in the early-2010s.

Whether or not we’d like to admit it, all fads eventually become cheugy. For the next Design Challenge, we want you to reference a trend that has fallen out of style in glorious fashion. Spoof a “Live, Laugh, Love” sign. Draw a toes-in-the-sand beach scene that says “Take me back.” Tell the world you’re willing to die on the hill of skinny jeans. Whatever you choose to design, do it in good fun! What’s cheugy one moment could become popular again the next. That’s how trends work!
