When early humans discovered fire approximately 2 million years ago, they used it to stay warm, cook their food, and ward off predatory animals. Fire remains essential to human survival today, however, when mishandled, it can wreak all sorts of havoc.
For this elemental challenge, use the thought of fire to illuminate your mind. Think about what it actually does. It can light a pathway through darkness. It clears away underbrush so soil can be cultivated and fosters new growth. It burns, whether you want it to or not. Fire has also been used throughout art and culture to symbolize concepts including passion, rebirth, and even hell. Dare we say disco inferno? Any of these ideas can prevail in a new design inspired by fire.
Visually speaking, there are a million directions you can go. The concept of fire gives you a unique opportunity to experiment with textures such as smoke and burnt surfaces. There’s also nothing more alluring than the reddish-orange glow of a flame. Just ask a moth!
