Fresh by ThePaperCrane is the winner of Threadless’s Air design contest, and it’s easy to see why. By encapsulating this lush landscape into a set of lung outlines, you get an immediate sense of fresh, clean air filling your own lungs. The varying heights of the landscape, which flows from low, placid lakes to rolling hills and just a hint of clouds beyond their peaks, make the whole scene seem to be filled with air (even though, being invisible, it can’t actually be seen). This is a really clever way of handling the “air” prompt, and I also like that because the art uses a more old-fashioned style (emphasized by the presence of some architectural follies interspersed among the trees) the air feels even fresher for being implied to be pre-industrial. The blue palette suits both the air theme (blue skies, of course) and the vintage sensibility of the artwork. I also appreciate that the lungs are left asymmetrical, a choice that helps both them and the interior to feel more natural and organic.
