Great Ice Cream by Ilustrata is my favorite Threadless print this week. We’ve seen the curled peak of an ice cream cone transformed into an ocean wave before, but using the memorable style of The Great Wave of Kanagawa is a neat innovation that gives this version some unique flair. I like the way drips at the bottom of the ice cream emphasize the liquid nature of the wave, and the lines and coloring used throughout look authentically like water in motion. There’s also a good eye for balance demonstrated in the piece, which uses a wooden stick and bright red sun to add interest and connect more strongly to the art’s Japanese influence. It’s beautifully done, and the result is a design that feels fresh and vibrant for summer, but with historical and artistic appeal as well.
