The Birch Tree Story by Jemae is my favorite Threadless print this week. It solves the problem of how to feature detailed illustration on a shirt in a very smart way, containing the drawing in the shape of a fallen leaf. This gives the shirt a clear image even at a far distance, with the bird and trees becoming more clear at a middle distance. It is at this length that you can appreciate the woodpecker’s active and immaculately drawn pattern and plumage, as well as the way the light blue color fills some tree trunks as a way of indicating distance. What makes this design truly special, though, is the unique way it reveals yet another layer in close up. The pattern on the closest birch tree’s trunk is full of nature and camping scenes, almost like a toile. The mix of light and dark still feels true to the birch bark, but brings humans into the thick of the nature it represents and makes the concept even more clever and appealing.
Threadless prints new shirts every week, chosen from the designs submitted by and voted on by site members. Most winners earn $1 to $7 per item sold.
